DTH-DRILL RODS (API REG.)

FAQ: DTH – DRILL RODS (API REG. THREAD JOINTS)

What makes a great DTH-Drill Rod?

A great DTH-drill rod has to be robust and reliable. It has to withstand even the toughest conditions and forces applied in the DTH-drilling process.

Is there a difference between a DTH-Drill Rod & DTH-Drill Pipe?

DTH-drill pipe is commonly used for larger diameter applications, since they are produced as a double pipe system. However, the terminology is often mixed. Therefore, many professionals also call them DTH-drill rods, even though the term “drill rod” is commonly used for smaller diameter, single layer applications.

When do you recommend API REG. Threads and when HEX-joints?

Commonly, we recommend to use API REG. Thread Drill Rods in diameters that are 219mm or smaller.  273mm & upwards – we recommend HEX joints. This is due to the fact that in larger diameters, API REG. threads are sometimes difficult to open in site conditions.

What is the largest reasonable diameter for DTH-Rods with API REG. joints?

In general, we recommend API REG. to drill rods up to 219mm. The larger the diameter and DTH-rotary head torque, the tighter the joints will be attached. Large diameter API REG. thread joints are sometimes difficult to open in site conditions.

How do I know my API REG. thread type and dimensions?

  • You can contact us, we inform you what measurements we need. We can then advice your correct API REG. thread joint.

What is the maximum length for a single DTH-Drill Rod?

For site operation & transport purposes, we recommend to use lengths that are below 12 meters / drill rod

Is it possible to order customized DTH Drill Rods?

Tri-Mach produces most of the DTH- API REG. drill rods with some customization for Driller preferences. It is possible to customize almost everything. For example, it has been popular to create Heavy Duty DTH-drill pipes for increasing their lifetime.

I have extra steel casings at my warehouse. Can I use those for creating new DTH-Drill Pipes?

Yes. Provided they are in good condition (round, no dents), using old steel casings is a good way to save some time & cost in production.
