DTH DRILL RODS (API REG.)

Trimach’s DTH Drill Rods (API REG) are built for drillers who face demanding conditions — in foundation, mining, and geothermal projects where every meter counts. When the goal is to keep drilling, not repairing, precision-machined API REG threads, friction-welded joints, heat-treated high-grade steel, and optimized airflow keep the energy moving where it matters — straight to the bit. The result: steady penetration, fewer breakdowns, and tools that last.

Key Advantages of Tri-Mach DTH Drill Rods API REG.

How a DTH Drill Rod Transfers Power — From Rig to Rock ?

DTH drill rods (also known as drill tubes or drill pipes) serve as the mechanism to transmit impact force and rotation torque to the DTH hammer and DTH bit, while providing passage for air flow. Tri-Mach supplies a full range of friction-welded DTH drill rods in standard sizes from 76mm to 273mm, and custom sizes up to 406mm, all available in various wall thicknesses.

In DTH drilling, the percussive DTH hammer is located behind the drill bit, inside the hammer, a piston powered by compressed air gives the drill bit its striking power, while the DTH hammer casing gives guidance to the drill bit; the drill string rotates while the drilling hammer continuously strikes down into the rock. The DTH drill rods transmit the necessary feed force and rotation to the DTH hammer and bit, as well as compressed air for the DTH hammer, more dth drill rods are added to the top of the drill string as the hole gets deeper. The fast hammer impact breaks hard rock into small particles, which are blown up by the air exhaust from the DTH hammer. A Trimach rod keeps the power line tight from the top drive to the rock.

In casing and DTH ring bit systems, these rods are what make it possible to drill clean, straight holes through overburden and into bedrock. Whether you’re advancing casing or working in hard formation, the rod’s job never changes — transfer every bit of energy efficiently, meter after meter.

FAQ: DTH – DRILL RODS (API REG. THREAD JOINTS)

A great DTH drill rod must stay straight, strong, and reliable under extreme torque and impact. It needs to handle constant rotation, vibration, and pressure without losing thread integrity or energy transfer. Trimach rods are heat-treated, friction-welded, and precision-machined for exactly that.

Fast wear usually comes from low-quality steel, poor heat treatment, or inaccurate threads. In hard formations or high-torque conditions, these weaknesses show up fast. Trimach uses high-grade alloy steel and precision API REG machining to reduce wear and extend lifetime in real drilling conditions.

Yes — drill pipe is often used for large-diameter work because it’s built as a double-pipe system. Drill rod usually means a single-pipe design for smaller diameters. Still, in everyday language, many drillers use the terms interchangeably.

API REG thread rods are ideal for diameters up to 273 mm. Above that, HEX joints are easier to open and handle on site. API REG provides strong, sealed connections — but in larger diameters, torque and site conditions can make HEX a better fit.

We recommend API REG drill rods up to 273 mm and above, go with HEX joints to avoid joint seizing and ensure easier maintenance in field conditions.

Contact us — we’ll tell you exactly what measurements to take. With those, we can confirm the correct API REG joint and matching hammer setup.

For efficient transport and handling, we suggest rods under 12 meters. Most rigs operate best with 3–6 m rods, balancing stability, weight, and ease of use.

Trimach RodMate is your best solution for preventing thread seizing. This specially formulated thread lubricant is designed specifically for DTH drill rod connections. Always avoid over-torquing and ensure threads are clean before connection. Combined with Trimach’s precision-machined threads and superior surface finish, RodMate minimizes galling and ensures smooth make-up/break-out even after long drilling cycles.

Friction-welded joints with perfect alignment ensure full torque transfer without stress points. That’s what prevents cracks and weld failures in high-impact drilling.

Inside the rod, air channels are machined to reduce turbulence. Smooth airflow improves hammer impact efficiency and keeps power going directly to the bit — less energy wasted, faster penetration.

Yes. We can produce customized drilling rods for any project — wall thickness, thread type, length, or air channel design. Heavy-duty models are popular in mining and foundation drilling where extended lifetime is critical.

Yes, as long as they’re round and free from dents. Using existing casings can reduce cost and lead time. We can inspect and adapt them for new DTH drill pipes.

A strong, well-machined rod keeps energy flowing efficiently and prevents failures in the field. Less downtime means more meters drilled per shift — that’s the core value of every Trimach DTH drill rod.
