DTH Wing Bits Systems

DTH Wing Bits are used in soft, loose ground with scattered boulders, where soil and clay can collapse into the hole, slow drilling, and hinder DTH equipment withdrawal. MAXA’s PiloTec Air-lift type stable concentric casing system solves this by drilling slightly over casing diameter while advancing the casing at the same time.

DTH Wing Bits Drilling Method

In soft and loose ground with scattered boulders, soil and clay can collapse into the hole, slow drilling, and hinder withdrawal of the DTH equipment. MAXA’s PiloTec Air-lift type stable concentric casing system drills slightly over casing diameter and advances the casing simultaneously. The system uses a pilot bit, segments, and a locking system. The segments expand and retract concentrically to drill a straighter hole. At final depth, reverse rotation closes the segments, allowing the PiloTec casing system and DTH drill string to be withdrawn. Worn segments can be replaced separately, making maintenance more economical.

FAQ: DTH Wing Bits

DTH Wing Bits systems work best in relatively soft ground conditions with a fairly level bedrock surface. They are also well suited for applications where the casing bottom can be left on solid soil or directly on bedrock.

The most demanding conditions for DTH Wing Bits systems are soils with large boulders, inclined bedrock surfaces, and applications where the casing is left in soft soil. In these conditions, closing the wings can become more difficult.

If the ground conditions become too demanding for Wing Bits, changing to Ring Bits is a practical option. This is especially relevant in bouldery ground, on inclined bedrock, or when the casing cannot be left on a solid layer.

Yes. DTH Wing Bits systems are commonly used for drilling interlocked DTH pile walls. This is a standard and well-established application for the system.
